now they want our money?

Remember when you used to listen to WUTC?
When they had good DJ's with good local programming?
Remember when it had some relevance to the city?

Guess what? Now the station wants your money.
Their Spring fundraising campaign starts up on April 20th.

I strongly urge people to re-evaluate what the station means
to them before sending in their money. Before writing a check,
ask yourself:

Is the station really fulfilling its potential in our city?

How does WUTC currently enhance the Chattanooga experience?

Why am I paying for more NPR programming when I can just
stream it online at my own convenience for free?

How might my donation better serve the community?

For the last question I may have a solution: donate to Chattablogs.
Seriously. We need a new server big time. 700 blogs are currently
hosted on the Terrablog server. It's lagging and can't keep
up with the demand. Besides, our blogs exist out of love for the
city...which is more than I can say for WUTC.

A new server runs $3k. That's cheaper than running a radio station.

Need more info on the Terrablogs project? Read a recent article in
the Times-Free Press.

So, this random guy IM'd tonight telling me about the new Secretly Canadian
forum
. He found me via my first record review on Damien Jurado's site.
It wasn't a real review, but probably the first time I ever wrote extensively about
a record (Rehearsals for Departure).

Anyway, he started telling me about this song on the UK version of the Letters
and Drawings single. He decided to post the song online. Beautiful beautiful stuff.
Ole D.J. did it again. Apparently, this was from the RFD sessions.

i'm getting use, getting use to the rejection

Last night, The Features and J-Roddy Walston ripped Chattanooga a new one at
Rhythm and Brews. 300+ people danced and shaked and tore their vocal cords
screaming their nah nah nah's and whoa-a-whoa's. Kids were moving around,
celebrating birthdays, and toasting great rock and roll.

The last song J-Roddy played was brand new. I forgot the name, but it kicked
ass. And the Fight Song and Baltimore are 2 of my favorites now. Those guys
sounded good. Really good. I hope this line-up sticks. J-Roddy broke a mic stand
during Rock and Roll II. Zach Westphal is the funniest man I've ever seen on a
stage. Following a solo, I screamed at Billy, "too much fuckin' heat!"

Features pulled out some old stuff which was really cool. Buffalohead might have
been just for me (I requested it earlier that day). The title (above) is taken from
a line in the chorus for all you uninitiated kids. And Kari-Anne was a surprise; they
haven't done that one in Chatty in a while. New stuff by them is starting to come
together as well. Last time, it was a little rough, but I'm really digging it now.
Rollum was kicking some serious ass as usual. People don't realize this but
Parrish (on keys) is really fun to watch. That guy is cool as shit.

Which band won the battle of Chattanooga last night? Tough call.
I think when it's all said and done, rock and roll won.

If you missed it b/c of the birthday party at Lamar's, it's understandable.
If you missed it b/c of laziness or you think you had something more important
to do, then you're a damn fool.

last night

So Monday, I was supposed to guest-DJ on CFAR on The Supper Club. The station
was off the air that day and we did the show yesterday. I'm not sure how many
people were listening, but here's my playlist:

1. The Features - See You Through
2. Eagles of Death Metal - I Want You So Hard
3. Mates of State - Think Long
4. Jaymay - Gray or Blue
5. Teenage Prayers - Center of the World
6. The Streets - When You Wasn't Famous
7. Queen - Bicycle Race

Afterwards, we went to the Pickle Barrel for drinks. I pissed Laney off (again) by
raining on her indie rock dream parade. Abby convinced me to move to NYC, and
then tried to change my mind. Ryan and I played pop culture trivia.

Sidenote: Ryan and Abby say hello to Jeff.

So my site has gotten a large number of hits from Googling "Band of Horses" today.
No doubt due to the 8.8 rating given to Everything All the Time on Pitchfork today.
Here is the review.

The internet hype machine...no one wants to be left behind.
People are frightened of missing the next big thing. Such a sad state indie
rock is entering where one website with sketchy reviews is the number one
barometer of cool.

I'm not knocking the record. I think it's pretty decent. I'm just a little surprised.

c'mon ryan adams

This article recently appeared on Pitchfork.
A couple of people are being prosecuted for leaking Ryan Adams' Jacksonville City
Nights
onto the internet before its intial release. I'm assuming that this was more
at the behest of UMG rather than Adams, but his name will undoubtedly be
attached to the issue more than his label's. When I think of Napster, I think of
Metallica. Well, that's not true. I think of lots of free music. Point taken though.

Oh, the poor RIAA...the big 4 are hanging by a thread and they barely realize it.
Sometimes I pity the music industry's arrogance.

show promotion pt. 2 - please help

As pointed out earlier, show promotion in Chattanooga is a major pain in the ass.
It's not that bands don't want to play here. I've gotten several requests in
the past 2 weeks from bands that could draw reasonable numbers (around 50 to
200 people), the problem stems from the available venues and the large overhead
of putting on shows at each of them. I could go through and explain the difficulty
of various places as I did with Lamar's, but suffice it to say, it's a difficult to
near-impossible task.

I am in the market for ideas and locations. No, I'm not looking to start a
venue. I am in the market for space - cheap space, preferably free, for use on a
monthly basis. A temporary alcohol license is relatively cheap to come by and I'm
pretty sure I can twist some arms to get a sound system.

I have a few ideas of my own, but I'm curious about what other people think too.
So, if you've ever noticed a particular building or restaurant that would be perfect
as a music venue, please e-mail me.

he's so random

Here are a few things.

There is a feature running on Jaymay in the Chattanooga Pulse tomorrow. It was
written by yours truly. Also, she is in an online contest for NYC Indie Artist of the
Month for April. Go here to vote for her. She's up against We Are Scientists, Animal
Collective, Fiery Furnaces, etc. Seeing as how she's the only real indie artist on
there she deserves to win. Plus her music rules. Go vote fool.
(This reminded me of a certain conspiracy by the LP on the Brenden Leonard show.)

Also, faxing in your resume for jobs is antiquated. Get with the times, peeps.

Finally. I knew there were companies that bought domains and sold them to people,
but I didn't realize they could cost as much as $2800. While I understand this is
great for making money, these companies have what I consider poor business
models. They do not offer services, ideas, or products. Their business does not promote in any way shape or form the excellence of mankind, provide inspiration,
or even offer a tangible product. They are vultures. I truly feel sorry for people
whose lives are bent on money. Especially when you consider I have followed
inspiration to poverty time and time again. Here's to the after-life.

e equals m.c. deuce

This past week was insane, and the one that just began will undoubtedly equal
its predecessor. I am in about as much transition as a 27 year old can find
himself in.

Lately, I've been remembering an essay by Einstein. For the past 8 years or so
this one has been very important to me. It's fairly well-known, but I need the
reminder from time to time. (Word up Ponyboy Curtis.)

Self-Portrait by Albert Einstein
Of what is significant in one's own existence one is hardly aware, and it certainly
should not bother the other fellow. What does a fish know about the water in
which he swims all his life?

The bitter and the sweet come from the outside, the hard from within, from one's own efforts. For the most part I do the thing which my own nature drives me to
do. It is embarrassing to earn so much respect and love for it. Arrows of hate
have been shot at me too; but they never hit me, because somehow they
belonged to another world, with which I have no connection whatsoever.

I live in that solitude which is painful in youth, but delicious in the years of maturity.

help me buy a camera

I'm going to be in the market for a digital camera in about a month. I can't drop
a grand on some fancy Canon deal, but I'm looking to spend $500. I don't want
to get ripped off on some "Best Buy take snapshots of your friends" thing with a
bunch of bells and whistles I don't need. It will mainly be used for journalism. So
resoultion, color quality, and versatility are the most important things I'm looking
for. I don't need features like red-eye protection or video recording or built-in editing features (I have Photoshop). I need something that takes memory
cards, and has a USB output. Switchable lenses would be great if that's even an
option at that price.

With all that said, I'm looking for a "serious camera" at a mid-range price. I realize
that to the serious photographer, that's an impossibility (kind of like asking me
what's the best mic pre for under a grand...the answer is one doesn't exist).

While I would appreciate recommendations, links to good photography sites would
be even better. There are a lot of sites devoted to photography, but I have no idea
how to weed out the good from the bad.

novice extraordinaire.

tfp enters 2006?

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the Times-Free Press on Sunday afternoons. And
Trevor Higgins is one of my good friends. I enjoy his work, and he's very proactive
in the music scene, but...their website sucks. Aside from major headlines, it's only
available to paying subscribers. I do not get this at all. I understand that
maintaining a paper that size costs a lot of money, but that's what banner ads and
pop-ups are for. I refer you to exhibit A and B. TFP controls information in this
town. Since it merged (it used to be 2 different papers), it has no competition.
I can only attribute its pay to play web interface to arrogance.

Many people are unaware but the paper does have a blogsite. I frequent the site
on a weekly basis, and I'm always very frustrated with its interface. It always
comes off as more of a medium for informal reporting than a true blogsite. The
biggest problem is that it's not a public forum. The only way to comment is to
e-mail the author, and comments aren't ever posted from what I'm able to
gather. As of today, this has been updated so that blog entries are posted in a
window on the main page alongside their new podcasts (I haven't checked those
out yet). But the new system's archiving features are terrible. And you still can't
comment. I don't understand why they are eschewing a public forum such as
this one.

I'm sure a lot of people will read this from the paper, and I want you to understand
that I'm not looking to be a critic; I truly want to see your newspaper
do great things, and I would love to see it command a great web presence in the
city, but c'mon this isn't rocket science. And you have the cash to implement
a great website. So what's stopping you?
