today's headlines

So, I've fallen off the chain the past week on music news. Local and otherwise.

Here's a recap.

DJ Shadow signs to Universal. New record out this summer. Details here

Everyone's favorite unsigned band, Tapes n Tapes, sign to XL. Click.

Gnarls Barkley announce Secret Myspace show.

Parker Lewis fired from 96.5 last Friday. So far, Parker and Mountain are hush hush
about the whole ordeal. I heard it was quite the catfight on Friday though. (See, I kept my word). Frankly, I don't care. Morning DJ's are inherently annoying.

Jairus plays Lamar's this Saturday with The Carter Administration.

It's probably about time for a monthly concert calendar. I'll get to it this weekend.

unum unum

So this is way off-topic, but I've applied for a job at Unum Provident, and I
was wondering if any of you know someone that works there, or more specifically
the HR person, so my name/resume gets on the top of the list.

If so, please e-mail me and I won't bite.

remembering josh rouse

I had no idea Josh Rouse releases a new record tomorrow.
His last one, Nashville, left me with dry-mouth.

This one is called Subtítulo.
I'm curious to hear it despite this review. But I kinda suspect it's right on.

Here's to 1972.
If you haven't heard it, I highly recommend it.
Excellent writing, catchy songs, and great production.

For that matter, why does Gnarls artwork suck so bad?

3 cheers

To my pleasant surprise, silvergiraffe located a bunch of records we've been
wanting last night. I won't go into the who and what, but I'm way stoked. Speaking
of which, he wrote an excellent review of the Good Players/Tremont show last
Sunday.

I've not been writing much lately. And thats ok. I will be moving this site very very
soon...thanks to dryan and silver.

I was supposed to post a mix last week, but I don't think that's gonna happen.
But 0249 and Safeguy pretty much took care of all the songs I would have posted.

I may start doing RVR podcasts depending on the interest and demand.

The idea of 'being productive' is funny to me.
People get hung up on a lotta shit that doesn't matter.
Crazy-ass week.
You think you know someone and then you find out how bad they suck.
3 cheers for Slothville.

beatles for sale

According to a Billboard Article, Beatles material will be available online very soon.
Maybe you haven't noticed, but their catalog has never
been for sale on the internet. On top of this, The Beatles albums have been
remastered (again) and the new versions will the ones for sale.

Ironically, a lawsuit is still up in the air between Apple Corps. (Fab 4 record label)
and Apple for trademark violation by the iTunes Music Store.

So remastered Beatles? Hopefully, they'll do a much better job this time around.
The CD's that have been available sound like shit. Do I plan on repurchasing
the entire catalog again? Hell no. Nice try EMI.

death cab for ms

Death Cab for Cutie released Directions today. The DVD features 11 short films
inspired by Plans. What's the big deal you ask?

As it turns out, they are premiering Directions at Tribeca Film Festival on May 4
in NYC. That premiere is a benefit for St. Jude's Research Hospital.
So what of it?

As it turns out, my boy Safeguy designed the Myspace profile for the project.
And it looks really good and he goes to NYC in May for the premiere.

(So what did I do today? Played some Halo.)

Wha? $30 for a 2 day pass. That is a steal. I'm sure in between sets, their writers
will read reviews of the next band, so the crowd knows whether they should
spend time listening to a 7.3 or go get another hotdog. Seriously though, that's
a great lineup and excellent deal. Here's to Chicago Mr James.

half-handed cloud

Half-Handed Cloud, Halos and Lassos.

Chattanooga native, John Ringhofer, sings joyful Christian minuets on his 5th release. Stereo typewriters, drum machines, and Casio keyboards flesh out the arrangements on the Smile-esque record. Brief and to the point, Ringhofer (also part of Sufjan’s Noisemakers) paints an interesting slightly-schizo picture. The tracks change form quickly. Each one falls under the 2 minute mark. The record is at its best in one sitting.

eagles of death metal

Eagles of Death Metal Death by Sexy.

A crazy man laughs. Distorted guitars jangle and pop on “I Want You So Hard.” Riffs pulse from the speakers. Octave piano bounces on top. Layered vocals sing the refrain: “My friends are talking and they’re telling you/ just leave him alone cuz the boy’s bad news.” Midtempo rocker, “I Got a Feeling,” wails, “I love you baby, you’re just nineteeeeen.” A floor tom beat grooves with over-compressed guitars and choked crash cymbals. “Cherry Cola” beats down pounding drums, and a solo vis-à-vis Brian May.

“Solid Gold” breaks album form with shaker, deep drums and acoustic slide. Calm vocals swagger and gleam: “You’ll see us coming and we’ll make you scream.” A lone guitar alternates a few notes behind the mix. Processed vocals bend with the hook “Sweat!” Acoustic blues, tambourine, and handclaps groove on the black spiritual, “Bag O’ Miracles.” Harmony vocals sing, “Oh yes I got me some trouble Lord…Oh yes I feel so sad and lonesome.” A whistler solos. Feet stomp. People enter and exit the room. A child speaks. A grown man yells, “Praise God!”

The duo consists of Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age) and Jesse Hughes. Death by Sexy is a loud, in your face, old-fashioned rock record. Chauvinistic and irreverent (“I Want You So Hard” and “Bag O’ Miracles”). Catchy as hell. And poised to rock your socks off.
