the magnolia catfish co.

This Sunday(9/24), Magnolia Electric Co. & Catfish Haven play Rhythm and Brews.

Magnolia Electric Co. is the recent band from Jason Molina (Songs:Ohia). Dark,
brooding songwriting mixed with americana arrangements. Touring in support of
their new record, Fading Trails. Listen to Lonesome Valley. On the Myspace.

Catfish Haven just released Tell Me on Secretly Canadian a few weeks ago. The
band plays Memphis-style soul with bluesy lyrics and great arrangements.
Listen to Please Come Back or Crazy for Leaving. On the Myspace.
Do not miss their set.

downloading music

A recent Billboard Article discusses online sales and indie record stores. Criminal
and Grimey's are both listed as examples. The article mentions How I Became the
Bomb
and The Selmanaires too. Oh, and look. Thas Jon Burr and Co. pictured at
the bottom.

I can't help but raise a skeptical eyebrow towards the upcoming online stores.
I think a better idea might be to have merchant pages on iTunes (similar to Ebay).
Just a thought. And yours? Would you download from these online stores as
opposed to iTunes, Napster, Limewire, etc?

making of the band 8/31

Last night, I practiced with a band we'll call AmberBud for the 2nd time.
It's really refreshing to write things as you're going along as opposed to stepping
into fleshed out arrangements. 3 hours of practicing, discussing, and playing
a major role in the creative process lends itself to a feeling of importance on
some greater scale. Travis and I ate our words as the most complicated parts
became suddenly simple, vital, and interesting. Strange ideas gave birth to
fully-formed rationale.

Tonight, I meet back up with The Good Players. It's been months since we've
played together, but it should be interesting. I've been informed I'm working
out electronic beats from Four Score tonight.

Monday, I take off to St. Augustine for a little relaxation. Thank God.
Oh, and I leave Fresh Market 2 weeks from today. Thas right. New job.
I'm stoked.

Despite the great week I'm having, my music hard drive is dead...meaning I lost
my entire MP3 collection. That bums me out, but I think I'll be able to recover
a lot of it without transferring CDs again. See. File-Sharing does have a time and
a place. Though, not as detrimental, I will let this be a stab at anyone who
argues that hard disk recording is a viable option for permanent storage.
Geek rant ending in 5...4...3...2...

1 on 1 + 1

How I Became the Bomb surprised an ethusiastic crowd with their personal blend
of geek meets dancepop last night. The band played songs from their debut EP,
Let's Go!, with a few new numbers throughout the set (at least new to me). I was
blown away by how closely the EP resembles the live show. Their energy was really
great, and the room responded well. The lead singer resembles a
Frank Black/Morrissey hybrid on stage. In between lines of Secret Identity, I
realized he was toying with the pinky rings on both of his hands.

For those that missed How I Became the Bomb, take comfort because they are
coming back on October 28 @ Parkway Billiards with J-Roddy Walston and The
Business
. That's right, in case you missed it, J-Roddy will be back in town for a
Halloween show. Those 2 bands, costumes, and beer = October 28.

The Features debuted their new EP, Contrast, as well as new keyboardist, Mark
Bond (former De Novo Dahl). It was interesting seeing them with someone other
than Parish on keys (I've been told Parish was in attendance at the show too). I
realized today that I've seen The Features more than any other band in my life.
So that's a lot of history for me. I thought Mark handled his new shoes quite well.
There were a couple of things I heard that were different, but they were minor,
and didn't affect the overall feel of the songs. My biggest complaint was on Mosis
Ptosis which few people know around Chattanooga anyway.

I ended up leaving before their encore with my ears ringing and my throat
scorched from cigarettes and yelling. Rock.

dots and loops

I can hardly believe that July is half through. This summer has been so strange.
Everything in my life is different right now. Some things good. Some things not
so good. Ironic that a little over a year ago, I moved to Chattanooga to start a
recording studio, and I've barely done any work in that vein since I've been back.

This weekend I travel to Memphis to visit Safeguy. I haven't been out of town in a
while and I'm excited. When I get back, I'm reconfiguring my computer and
setting up shop at 0249. I plan on getting back into programming beats and doing
the electronic thing simply because I have no other options right now.

Aaron Robbs, Travis Knight, Aaron Collier, and I are starting a pop band.
We're working on getting a practice space and me, a drum kit. I've heard demos
of the songs we're doing and they're quite good. I think it'll be really good. If
nothing else, it will be fun.

BTW, I'm in the market for a drum kit and a cheap MIDI controller. If you or your
brethren has either please let me know. Gracias.

i'm getting use, getting use to the rejection

Last night, The Features and J-Roddy Walston ripped Chattanooga a new one at
Rhythm and Brews. 300+ people danced and shaked and tore their vocal cords
screaming their nah nah nah's and whoa-a-whoa's. Kids were moving around,
celebrating birthdays, and toasting great rock and roll.

The last song J-Roddy played was brand new. I forgot the name, but it kicked
ass. And the Fight Song and Baltimore are 2 of my favorites now. Those guys
sounded good. Really good. I hope this line-up sticks. J-Roddy broke a mic stand
during Rock and Roll II. Zach Westphal is the funniest man I've ever seen on a
stage. Following a solo, I screamed at Billy, "too much fuckin' heat!"

Features pulled out some old stuff which was really cool. Buffalohead might have
been just for me (I requested it earlier that day). The title (above) is taken from
a line in the chorus for all you uninitiated kids. And Kari-Anne was a surprise; they
haven't done that one in Chatty in a while. New stuff by them is starting to come
together as well. Last time, it was a little rough, but I'm really digging it now.
Rollum was kicking some serious ass as usual. People don't realize this but
Parrish (on keys) is really fun to watch. That guy is cool as shit.

Which band won the battle of Chattanooga last night? Tough call.
I think when it's all said and done, rock and roll won.

If you missed it b/c of the birthday party at Lamar's, it's understandable.
If you missed it b/c of laziness or you think you had something more important
to do, then you're a damn fool.

last night

So Monday, I was supposed to guest-DJ on CFAR on The Supper Club. The station
was off the air that day and we did the show yesterday. I'm not sure how many
people were listening, but here's my playlist:

1. The Features - See You Through
2. Eagles of Death Metal - I Want You So Hard
3. Mates of State - Think Long
4. Jaymay - Gray or Blue
5. Teenage Prayers - Center of the World
6. The Streets - When You Wasn't Famous
7. Queen - Bicycle Race

Afterwards, we went to the Pickle Barrel for drinks. I pissed Laney off (again) by
raining on her indie rock dream parade. Abby convinced me to move to NYC, and
then tried to change my mind. Ryan and I played pop culture trivia.

Sidenote: Ryan and Abby say hello to Jeff.

anna kramer

First off, the show last night was great.
All 3 bands were excellent, and I met a lot of cool people at the after-party
(check out next week's issue of The Pulse for a review of the show, etc. Sorry
dudes. Proprietary)

Anyway, A Fir-Ju Well had a singer-songwriter named Anna Kramer on tour
with them. She is playing some of the dates with them, and they are
backing her up until SxSW. She and I hung out for a little while before the
show and talked about music and touring, etc. She gave me a copy of her CD,
Anna Kramer. This morning I popped it in and I was really impressed.

Check her out on the web.
Her Myspace profile has some music from the CD.
The songs, "No One Else I've Met" and "Beautiful Sleep" are particularly good.
Kind of John Fahey steel string meets Gillian Welch vocals.

are you kidding me?

I was thinking about this entry while shaving this morning.
Here are some alternate titles:
They Don't Call It Food Poisoning For Nothing
How Taco Bell Ruined My Weekend
Blacking Out On The Floor Of Erlanger's Bathroom

Yeah, my weekend went really, really bad.
On Friday @ 5:30 PM I had to go to the emergency room as a result of food
poisoning. All that to say, I missed everything this weekend: Monster Truck
Rally, Maylene and The Sons of Disaster, The Squid and the Whale, helping
Charles Allison move, and so forth. It was supposed to be action-packed and
way fun. Now Monday is here, and I still get dizzy when I stand for long periods

So I have nothing new to say. That new song I recorded Thursday is finally

what's new in the world of davidm

Lindsay Aquila made this.

A lot has been going on. Big emphasis on a lot.
I am starting to write for The Chattanooga Pulse, covering music.
I'm way stoked about this opportunity, and hopefully, you fine people
will enjoy my contributions to the paper.

I have been tooting my own horn saying I'm going to release some
solo music for the past month. The truth is that I haven't even started
recording yet. I've been so busy looking for a job that I can't
work on much else. Although, I do have a good deal of material written
right now, and I've recently spoken with some friends to help put
together a band for a few live appearances.
Plus, our studio (which is called Twisted Ankle BTW) is still in need of a drum
kit. Hopefully, this will be remedied soon.

The A Fir-Ju Well show is coming up, February 15. I just got the posters
in the mail yesterday. They are beautiful. I will post more about that later.

There are some other things in the works right now that will be awesome for
me and for the city of Chattanooga. I don't want to go into details just yet,
but I'm pumped regardless.

I've felt like a completely different person since January 1.
(Out with the old, in with the new.) Like I'm shaking the dust off my feet.
Life kicks ass.

show promotion at lamar's

Someone asked me recently why there aren’t as many shows at Lamar’s as there used to be. I’m pretty open about not being a fan of the venue, and there are a few reasons why.

Several years ago, Lamar’s was a great venue largely because you could put on shows there at a low cost. How many people remember seeing Neutral Milk Hotel, The Dirty Three, and Olivia Tremor Control there? At some point while I was living in Nashville, punk bands started playing there. One show in particular, a fight broke out, and the main room was trashed.

Following the event, Lamar’s setup a *No Show* policy. Eventually, they saw their alcohol sales go down which were probably pretty hefty during the hay days between 1998 and 2000. Instead of reversing their policy, they started having a room rental fee. This is pretty common for some venues, but there are several problems in this particular instance. For starters, all they have is a room. There is no PA; they don’t staff the events; and they don’t offer a cut of their bar sales to make up for any losses on your end.

great things to come for chattanooga music and arts

I've been hearing all this hype for months about how George Parker
is going to revitalize music in Chattanooga. In case you didn't know,
George was recently named General Manager of the Tivoli and
Memorial Auditorium. He's claiming that he's gonna bring big ticket acts
with some cultural relevance to Chattanooga.

Here's a list of upcoming events.

Tivoli:
Rickie Lee Jones in Concert: Friday, Feb. 3. at 7:30 PM (EST)
Menopause the Musical: Sunday, February 12 at 3:00 PM (EST)
George Thorogood & The Destroyers: Thurs., March 16 at 7:30 PM (EST)

Memorial Auditorium:
Sesame Street Live: Fri-Sun, January 13, 14, 15, 4 Shows!
The Man of Her Dreams: Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 8:00 PM (EST)
Gold City & the Crabb Family: Saturday, February 4 at 7:00 PM (EST)
Casting Crowns: Saturday, February 18 at 7:00 PM (EST)
Paul Belcher Gospel Concert: Saturday, March 11 at 7:00 PM (EST)
George Jones: Saturday, April 1 at 8:00 PM (EST)

George is an employee of our city.
Why not e-mail him and tell him what you think of his work thus far.

Also, you can read a great interview with his superior, Missy Crutchfield here.
Missy is head of the Arts, Parks, and Recreation for the city.

Changes at WUTC go into effect Tuesday.

John McCormack, WUTC station manager, told the Times Free Press:
"NPR programming attracts the most listeners [as opposed to local music
programming] which is why the syndicated shows are being extended."
Meanwhile the article (which ran Thursday) claims that the number of listeners
has declined from 58,000 to 30,000 since 2002. Hmm...how long has he been

from the hotseat to the cold one

Today I made the trek to ATL for a job interview. It was supposed to be a
really killer job that I was way pumped about. Upon my arrival, I found
out that the pay was lower than I was originally told by the president of the
company and the work schedule was grueling: 60 hours a week, constant
travel, and so forth. In addition, I would have to move to Atlanta.
I'm not a big fan of the city. A friend described my possible move as
"following the dollar straight into the depths of hell."
Never a truer word spoken, Dale.

I just got back in hopes that I would have returned e-mails about jobs in
Chattanooga, but that ole inbox was empty save for a few words
from my friend, Nick. Go figure. So now, I'm out $40 from gas and food,
I still have no job, but I look damn good in a tie. Say what you will about
DM, but he does know how to dress. (insert Derek Zoolander face here).

This week is plagued with concerns about WUTC and how that station is going
down the toilet. (C'mon, it sucks now and we all know it.) There will be a
couple of articles in the Pulse and the Free Press about it and then in a few
weeks it will make its format changes anyway...and thus another blow is
dealt to the arts community in Chattanooga. c'est la vie muthaf@ckas.

Words From Nick:
Tell your rabbit valley road people to prepare themselves for this link!!!
Check out the lead singer.

Programming Changes at WUTC

I received this mass e-mail from an unknown source.
Please take the time to read it and respond accordingly. Thank you.
- DM

I'm writing this email to alert you to important formatting changes at
WUTC-88.1. The ultimate goal is to change WUTC-88.1 from an A3 format
(local, eclectic, adult music plus national news) to a (syndicated,
national) talk format. The community will notice the first step towards this
goal (shrinking Richard Winham's program to a mere two hours and running
"All Things Considered" in repeating cycles from 4 to 8 p.m.) later this
month. The morning program has also been reduced from its original 3 hours
to two hours.

my life is feast or famine

Long story, but my New Year's went sour.
But I made up for it by tying up some loose ends.
I've spent a lot of time playing music the past couple of days,
and also writing a lot of music which has been kind of refreshing.
I hope to have some new stuff posted on Myspace by the end of
the month.

I've been out of the loop with my internet cravings and information.
Here's what I've picked up.

1. The Flaming Lips new record is out April 4. It is called At War With the Mystics
Details here.

2. I'm promoting another A Fir-Ju Well show for February 15.

I've been hard at work on the new studio with Stephen. We're recording
for the next few days. It should be fully operational by February.
I'm in overdrive right now. I've done nothing but breath music for the past
five days. It's been great like spinning plates.

the features blew (it out)

Alright, alright, don't get me wrong. I love The Features.
Absolutely love them. But what the hell was up with their set list last night?
Literally, half of the songs were post-Exhibit A.

There's an art to making set lists, and I was getting antsy during the
extended "new song segments" of the show. Not to mention the
encore that was all new material with the exception of "Idea of Growing Old."

I think it's great that they're playing new stuff, and some of the songs
were really good too. But you gotta balance that joint with some crowd-pleasers.
Maybe I'm just pissed that they didn't play my 2 favorites ("Kari-Anne"
and "My Dark Room").

On a final note, Mr. Photo-Blogger: I will kick your ass if you get in my
grill with your camera again, especially when it's followed by the remark,
"These guys are great. What's the name of the band again?" You just
took the same fucking picture of Matt Pelham over and over again.
Go stand on the side.

Despite my frustrations (I have been sick after all), I had a great time.
I got my crunk on with Silvergiraffe, And they say there's a norm, J-Roddy,
Sarah, Chris, and Rear 2 Fear. (If I forgot you, I apologize).

New Year's plans? No idea...I guess Lamar's and party-hopping.
I do know that I have 2 dates. That's one lady for each arm. Yes! I rule!

the state of being me

I've been sick for the past couple of days and I've noticed
something about my frail old body that I've never noticed before.
Like most people I lose my appetite when sick, but I just don't eat
even though I should. Today, my blood sugar got so low, I started
shaking while trying to buy gasoline.

I don't think I've ever shared this with anyone. My favorite website of
all time is dictionary.com. Sometimes when I'm bored or I am using
a word in an e-mail I'll ask myself, "Is this really the right use of the
word?" So I go on over to the best damn website ever and find out. I
looked up "arrogance" a couple of days ago because that's a word
that a lot of people mistakenly attribute to me. In a nutshell it means
"the state of overbearing pride." I really enjoyed that for some reason.
I think it was the word 'overbearing' that put it over the top for me. As
a side note, I relayed that story to someone else, and right before I
got to the definition, my friend blurted out, "and you saw a picture of
yourself?" Good one.

I'm not entirely convinced that mufflers are a necessity. My car is loud
as shit right now, and I kind of feel a mixture of badass and white trash
in my bones. Plus, it's like $80 to get that badboy replaced. Is it really
worth the cost?

The Features are playing in Chattanooga tonight, and I am way pumped.

Finally, my studio is moving to a new location in Chattanooga.
In addition, I am acquiring a Pro Tools HD system. This is a pretty
bigshot deal in case you didn't know. The timing of these events has me
second-guessing the move to Nashville for the near-future.

yule tide carols

Last year I co-produced an X-Mas CD with Jon Jon called Let's Keep the X in X-Mas,
a collection of traditional X-Mas songs re-arranged by the X-Mas Ensemble.

This year, I am pleased to announce that I have put together a collection of X-Mas originals from friends in the Chattanooga Area. The EP is called The Jesus Clause EP and is available for download.

The EP features 3 tracks by Charles Allison, Stephen Nichols, and myself.
Please download and enjoy.

Each track was recorded by the person who wrote it.
The artwork above was created by Victor Huckabee.

Merry Christmas.

Also in keeping up with the spirit of the season,
here are some links to the Sufjan Stevens Christmas MP3's.

My friends Tall Betsy and Safeguy put this EP out a few
Christmas's ago.

Bright Eyes has released 2 Christmas albums in the past
five years, Oh Holy Fools and A Christmas Album.
Both available from Saddle Creek Records.
You can download "Blue Christmas" and "Going For The Gold."

- The M. Carey song in particular really pumps me up.
- There are several versions of Little Drummer Boy here, and I had more but I stopped myself from adding them :)

(disturbing) fish-sticks

Tonight at Lamar's, Disturbing Fish presents American Analog Set with
Chris (no relation to Tom) Brokaw.
Doors open at 9 and the cover is $8.

I just finished the VCF record which means I will be completing work for the
X-Mas EP entitled "The Jesus Clause EP." I hope to have it up by Saturday or
Sunday at the latest. Promise(s).
I've prepared a special holiday blog that will include all kinds of holiday
downloads for you and your internet-loved ones.

On Sunday, I'm heading off to Music City USA to visit the Opryland Hotel
and it's awesome light display. This has been a tradition of mine since I lived
in Murfreesboro, and it's worth the 2 hour drive.

last night at lamar's

- ok before i begin, some guy just farted really loudly next to me (I'm at the
library) and now it stinks something awful.

- I sat upstairs for the whole show last night. I've never done this before. It's
sort of like a skybox because when you're upstairs you don't watch the band
(even though you have the best view), you talk to everyone up there. Second,
regardless of how little you smoke, you reek the next morning because
everyone's smoke is covering your body, hair, etc.

- Apparently there was some debate b/t the ladies over whether I looked liked
Adam Brody. I was waiting for the catfight to begin. I also got into the age-old
OC argument: who was cuter: Summer Roberts or Anna Stern?

- One of my favorite terms is man-collector. It always reminds me of the song
"Molly's Chambers" by Kings of Leon. It also reminds me to stay the fuck away.

- As a sidenote. On my way to the library this morning I heard Mark Kozeleck's
cover of "Ocean Breathes Salty"
on the radio. I've never been a huge fan of his,
but sometimes you hear him exactly when you want to.

Check out the best commerical ever. It's by Sony.

The Grammy nominations came out last week. I'm always kind of bored by
the nominations and the awards show itself. Why is it that the Oscars are
fairly respected and the Grammy's are not? Kanye is up for like 5 or 6 awards
this year. And Arcade Fire???

jeans jackets and central ave. (weekend overview)

- Josh's parents in town means free food, a clean house, and lots of lazing about.
(Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon)

- Gearing up for the release of X-Mas EP (finally). Lots of people are already
offended by the cover art.

- Hung out with Andre, Stephen, and Sara to go see Ballroom Dancing.

- The White Stripes performed on The Daily Show a few nights ago.
Watch videos here.

- This has been one of my favorite links this week. A preview of the Beck remix
album, Guerolito. Click. Record comes out next week. Features remixes by Air
and Adrock of The Beastie Boys.

- Check out this Gap commercial directed by Spike Jonze.

- Stopped in for 5 minutes at Lamar's to see Kingsbury Manx.
Boring...I think 5 people showed up.

- Realized that sarcasm is only effective amongst friends.

- While searching for the Gap commercial I found this site.

On Tuesday, Dec. 13, music bloggers will be posting Dean Grey's American Edit mashup.
Check out Daniel Ryan's site on that day to download the mp3's.

Another great mashup that'll probably be taken down in a couple of weeks. Q-Unit.

Gentle Indifference is a great site to check out. C'mon, all the cool kids are doing it.
By cool, I mean me, Mike...(uhm)
